The report covers the case of a 62-year-old shopkeeper in São Paulo who transferred around R$ 80,000 to a supposed American servicewoman on a mission in Syria, on the promise of the release of a suitcase holding R$ 3 million detained at customs. The victim's sister found that one of the destination accounts belonged to a branch in the east of the city. The digital crime forensic expert analysed the photos and the message exchanges, identified image compositing and showed that the number used is from Nigeria while the IP address points to Cape Town, South Africa, features of the romance scam run by specialised criminal groups.
