The report tells the story of a 69-year-old retiree living in Cidade Tiradentes, São Paulo, who lost more than R$ 100,000 in a romance scam run by a supposed American lieutenant on a mission in Iraq. The promise of US$ 2 million held up in customs led the victim to pay one fee after another and to receive threats of arrest. The forensic expert analysed the contact, the photos and the profiles used in the scam and established that the image of the fake officer has been circulating since 2019 in similar frauds worldwide, and also identified phone lines in India and Brazil used by the criminals.
